Artist Statement

My work is an ongoing study of the personal battle of one's internal and external self. It is a way for me to document the bodily space that we inhibit and emotional depth hidden within. By relating the crudeness of the physical body to the delicacy of the internal self, I challenge the opposing feelings of physical discomfort and internal safety. Using abstraction of form as a tool, I suggest a sense of familiarity to the body but impose a formal disconnect.

I often use my body as a tool or template. By intuitively tracing my form into different postures, I create a framework, leaving behind ambiguous forms that are empty vessels for further exploration into the hidden discomfort of my physical and emotional space.

Within each piece there is an ongoing dialogue between my movement throughout the tracing process and the forms that are reflected, where the form influences my movement and my movement influences the form. Through this process I display the results of this back and forth dialogue between my physical form and the depth of the forms reflected within my work.
